I. INTRODUCTION
The flags of the nations of the world are powerful symbols. They
represent in a concrete way the history, beliefs, and hopes of the
peoples of each country. A nation's flag expresses the unity of its
citizens, as well as the unique identity of that nation within the
global community.
Because of this, flags become useful tools for understanding and
appreciating the various cultures which make up our world. As this
precious planet of ours continues to shrink in size, due to ever-
advancing communications, such an understanding is vital for the
future of all of humankind if we are to survive as a species of worth.
It is therefore the hope of the programmer that this program will
spark a renewed interest in, and love for, the peoples of every nation
of our world, so that the richness and diversity of every culture
might enlighten us and enliven us, and so promote peace throughout the
earth.
The program requires a computer with at least 512K, operating with PC
or MS DOS 3.0 or greater, and a VGA, EGA or CGA Monitor.
FLAGS is user-supported software. You are encouraged to use, copy,
and distribute it as freely as you wish. But if you do find it
useful, we ask that you please send a registration fee of $25.00 to
WYNDWARE, One Parker Place, Suite 308, Janesville, WI 53545 U.S.A.
When you send in your fee, you will receive the latest version of
FLAGS and will become eligible to receive updates to the program as
improvements are made to it.
While we have done our best to create a good product, this program is
supplied "as is". The author disclaims all warranties, expressed or
implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no
liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from
the use of FLAGS.

III. GETTING STARTED
In order to include all the FLAGS files on one disk, they have been
"squeezed" together. To "unsqueeze" them and create a working copy of
FLAGS, you must run the INSTALL program:
(If you are installing to Floppy Disks you will need to have 3
formatted diskettes ready.)
Place the distribution disk in drive A.
At the A:> type INSTALL and press Return.
Follow the prompts and answer all questions.
Once installed, to run FLAGS on a Floppy-based system:
Place the Program Disk in drive A.
Place the Overlay Disk in drive B.
At the A:> type FLAGS and press Return.
To run FLAGS on a Hard Disk: e.g. drive C
Change Drive to Hard Disk type C:
Change to FLAGS Directory type CD \FLAGS
Start Program type FLAGS
When the Title Screen appears, press any key.
IV. VIEWING THE FLAGS
The FLAGS program displays representations of the National Flags of
all 190 independent nations of the world. In addition, several
hundred historical, naval, and regional flags are also represented.
The Main Menu consists of three boxes. The left box (with a red
background) lists different regions of the world. The upper right
(blue) box lists each nation in the highlighted region. The lower
right box lists special menus related to the highlighted region.
Type the number of one of the boxes to make that box active. Type the
letter of a region in the left box to list the nations and menus
related to that region. Type the letter of a nation in the upper
right box to view that nation's flag. Type the letter of a menu in
the lower right box to use that menu. Alternately, you may press the
<Tab> key to move from box to box, use the cursor arrow keys to move
the highlight, and press the <Return> key to select the highlighted
item. The <PgUp> and <PgDn> keys may be pressed in any box to change
the highlighted region.
At a Special Menu, type the letter of a flag to view that flag, press
<PgUp> or <PgDn> to move from menu to menu, or press the <Escape> key
to return to the Main Menu.
4
Once a flag is displayed, you may use the following keys:
F1 - View information about this flag's nation
F2 - Change flag colors (just for fun)
Home - View the flag originally chosen
Up/Down - View the previous or next flag (including special flags)
PgUp/PgDn - View the flag of the previous or next nation
Escape - Return to the menu
(You don't need to wait until the list of keys appears before using
them.)
V. NOTES ON THE FLAGS
The flags represented in this program are the National Flags of the
nations of the world, the flags flown by the citizens of the nations.
These occasionally differ from the government or State Flags, which
sometimes include the State Arms added to the National Flags.
Most flags have official proportions specified for the ratio of the
length of the flag to the width. Here most flags have been depicted
with the same basic proportions, unless a flag has unusual proportions
(such as Qatar), or if a flag's proportions are the only
characteristic which distinguishes it from another (such as Ecuador
compared to Colombia).
Nations and flags are constantly changing. Many sources were used to
keep the program as up-to-date as possible, but no guarantee can be
made as to the accuracy of any particular information. Information
from the following sources was especially valuable in the creation of
the program:
Dr. William G. Crampton Dr. Whitney Smith
The Flag Institute, 10 Vicarage Road Flag Research Center, Box 580
Chester CH2 3HZ, England Winchester, MA 01890, USA
VI. CHANGING FLAG COLORS
By pressing the <F2> key when the "F2" option is displayed at the
bottom of the screen, the colors of the flags may be changed (just for
fun). At the Changing Colors screen, use the cursor arrow keys to
move from color to color. Type the letter of the desired new color
after the box of the color you wish to change. (example: To change
red to purple, type the letter F after `Red'.)
Once you have changed all the colors you wish, press <F2> to return to
the program using the new colors, or press <Esc> to resume the true
colors of the flags. All color changes are retained throughout the
program until the <F2> option is chosen again, or until the Flag Quiz
is chosen.
5
VII. FLAG QUIZ
To do the Flag Quiz, press the <F3> key at the Main Menu. Choose the
desired category (region of the world), and the desired level of
difficulty (the number of choices displayed for each flag). More
points are given the higher the level or the more flags in the
category.
A number of choices of nations will then be presented. Take a moment
to look them over, then press any key. As soon as you recognize the
flag being formed, press a key again. The sooner this key is pressed,
the more points given (or deducted if the guess is incorrect).
After pressing a key, the choices are re-displayed. Type the number
of your guess. The computer will show the correct answer, and give or
deduct points accordingly.
Once all 10 flags have been guessed, the program analyzes your results
and displays an appropriate message. If the score is one of the 10
highest on record for the selected category, then type your name in
the field which appears and press <Return>. The program then displays
the highest 10 scores for the selected category, and any key may be
pressed to return to the Master Menu.
At any time during the Quiz, you may press the <Esc> key to abort the
Quiz and return to the Main Menu.
VIII. FLAG PARADE
For a continuous parade of flags, press the <F4> key at the Main Menu,
then type Y (for Yes) if you wish to see only the National Flags, or
N (for No) to view all the flags. Each flag is shown for a short
time, then the next is shown. To end the parade, press the <Escape>
key at any time (or press any other key to go immediately to the next
flag).
IX. PROGRAM OPTIONS
To set various program options, press the <F5> key at the Main Menu.
Then type G or T to select the Graphics or (slightly faster) Text
interface. Type R or A to list flags by Region or Alphabetically.
Enter a number from 0 to 30 seconds to indicate how many seconds the
program should pause at various points. You may also press the <F3>
key to reset all options to their default values.
When finished setting the options, press the <F2> key to save the
changes, or press the <Escape> key to keep the options as they were
previously set.
6
If you choose the Alphabetical listing, then all the National Flags
will appear on the left side of the Main Menu, with the Special Menus
on the right. Use the arrow keys or <PgUp> and <PgDn> keys to scroll
the nation list. To find a nation quickly, type the first letter of
its name.
X. HISTORIES
Histories of flags are available at several Special Menus by typing a
number. To view an entire history, read each screen of information,
then follow the prompts at the bottom of each screen.
At any time during the histories, you may press <PgUp> or <PgDn> to
jump backwards or forwards one history screen. Press <Esc> to abort
the history and return to the former Area Menu. Pressing any other
key will cause the program to continue immediately to the next stage
of the history.
XI. SECRET MENU
There is a Secret Menu, hidden but accessible, which features flags
designed by the programmer.
XII. EXITING FLAGS
To exit the FLAGS program and return to DOS, press the <F10> key at
the Main Menu.
